ABCD: Can asset based community development work in rural areas?

In Wiltshire, we have been trying to develop a way of linking up assets and spreading good ideas across the County.  When we talk about assets, we mean community 'connectors,' volunteers, community led projects, open resources and physical things.

We have loads of good stuf happening in the County: speedwatch schemes, agricultural cooperatives, village shops, telephone box libraries, community orchards, street pastors, young advisors, walking for health groups and hundreds more.  Chances are you have this going on where you live too.

We know these things can work.  And, we know that the people that have set up these projects are really proud of them.  In fact, give them a chance and they will tell you all about it - how they set it up, the problems they had to overcome, the successes.

So, our idea is a simple one.  Showcase the good stuff and promote it widely so that others can see what is achievable.  Then, when people are interested connect them to the community evangelists who have delivered the projects in their patch.  Mix in some support and help, and watch what happens.  A social contagion!  The ABCD virus spreads the good stuff, building assets making connections and linking up social capital.

Well that is the plan.  Can it work?  You tell me.  Here is a visual representation of what we are hoping to achieve:  Click Here
